Mary Berry opens Horatio’s Garden Stoke Mandeville

Horatio’s Garden has created a brand new therapeutic garden at The National Spinal Injuries Centre in Stoke Mandeville with help from the National Garden Scheme – and it was opened by our President, Mary Berry, on 9th September 2018.

The beautiful and fully accessible garden – which was designed by Joe Swift and created by head gardener, Jacqui, and a team of volunteers – provides an oasis for patients who spend many months at Stoke Mandeville Hospital with spinal injuries, helps their recovery through garden and art therapy, and provides spaces to socialise. The garden includes an eco-garden room, water features and a variety of planting, and is situated just outside the unit so patients can enjoy the garden from the wards.

Our President, Mary Berry, officially opened the garden for The National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire earlier this month, an event which was also attended by Horatio’s Garden co-founder and chair of the trustees, Olivia Chapple; Joe Swift; and patients from the The National Spinal Injury Centre.

Horatio’s Garden is one of the National Garden Scheme’s gardens and health charities – receiving funding for work which promotes the physical and mental health benefits of gardens and gardening. We have donated a total of £180,000 to help Horatio’s Garden create and care for two therapeutic gardens in NHS regional spinal injury centres – one at Stoke Mandeville Hospital and a further development at the Midland Centre for Spinal Injury in Oswestry, which is due to open in Spring 2019.

Horatio’s Garden was set up in memory of 17 year old Horatio Chapple – who was killed by a polar bear while on an expedition in Norway in 2011. It was his vision to create beautiful calm spaces for patients at a traumatic time in their lives. Visit the Horatio’s Garden website for more information about the charity.
