Share a garden visit this Mother’s Day Weekend

Chocolates and flowers are often the go-to gift for many mums on Mother’s Day but there is a gift that mum and the whole family can enjoy, what’s more it’s full of flowers, delicious cake and fresh air, and supports charity too!

With 32 gardens open over the Mother’s Day Weekend on March 26th and 27th (some on both days!) a visit to a National Garden Scheme garden makes a wonderful gift for garden loving mums.

“Although it’s early in the garden visiting season the gardens we have open are wonderful ways to enjoy the fresh air, planting inspiration and the joy of being back in a garden,” says National Garden Scheme Chief Executive, George Plumptre.

For serious plant-loving mums a visit to Copton Ash in Kent is perfect. It’s a garden grown out of a love and fascination with plants and contains a wide collection including many rarities and newly introduced species raised from wild seed. With wonderful woodland flowers, hellebores and flowering trees and shrubs in spring there’s even an Alpine and dryland plant nursery to visit.

For great gardens with walks try Godmersham Park in Kent with its historic links to Jane Austen where you can take tea in the Orangery, or Haldon Grange in Devon, a peaceful, well established 12-acre garden boasting one of the largest collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, magnolias and camellias interspersed with mature and rare trees and complemented by a lake and cascading ponds. Plants are on sale, along with teas and home bakes.

Llanover in Gwent (pictured above) is packed full of history, inspiration and gorgeous water features with a series of ponds, cascades and rills forming the backbone of this 15-acre garden as the stream winds its way from its source in the Black Mountains to the River Usk.  Or try Whitfield in Hereford with its fabulous parkland and stunning views or Fawley House in Yorkshire with its gorgeous spring flowers and treasure hunt for the children.

With entry starting at £5 for adults and children going free, and all proceeds supporting some of the country’s best-loved nursing and health charities, it’s a wonderfully affordable gift that gives twice.
