About 9 Main Street
Designed by an artist to emphasise the changing seasons, the garden is a palette of colours which echoes the progression of the rural setting against which it is juxtaposed. The garden evolves seductively from cool shades and pastels, when the mauves and pinks of early summer are set against the pale green of new growth, before exploding into fiery warmth when the deep jewel colours contrast with the darker greens of lush high summer. The abundance of rich colour at the height of summer makes this garden an exciting and visually sensuous experience during a period when many other gardens have passed their peak. Early August was therefore chosen for the ‘Open Gardens’ public viewing date. Private visitors are not disappointed either earlier or indeed later in the season. The garden exhibits the classic English abundance of scent and flower in early summer and remains lush in September when dahlias, sedums and hardy cyclamen are displayed against the backdrop of Autumnal colour. In homage to Beth Chatto, work has taken place to adapt parts of the drive and former parking space into dry, sunny, growing areas. Planting includes early species bulbs, alpines, grasses, eremurus, succulents, eryngiums and other types of drought tolerant subjects. The aim is to echo the memory of a mediterranean hillside.A visitor from a group of Hardy Plant Society members wrote- `The way you have created a pond on the slope and incorporated the view beyond is masterly. The plants- both individually and how they have been put together- are a delight. It is the sort of garden dear to a Hardy Planter`s heart.`The gardener is happy to arrange for parties to visit at times other than the open day. Wide collection of home- grown plants for sale.
