About Gold Hill
The garden is approached down a lane at the end of which is an old established cherry tree and newly planted ornamental pear. The bed under the cherry tree was planted with meadow flowers in autumn 2018. To the right of the cherry tree is the formal garden comprising a round lawn bordered by yew divided mixed shrub and perennial planting which gives interest throughout the year. On the other side of the lawn is a sunk garden under an overhanging ‘Lutyens style’ window bordered by a crevice garden and mixed planted bank. Beyond is a rose garden against a pre-existing low stone wall leading to the kitchen garden which has raised beds, a small greenhouse and shed. Further down a few fruit trees have been planted. The gently sloping lower lawn is bounded by topiary yew trees, Holm Oak trees and a pergola on which is growing wisteria. Beyond is an old animal house which separates the formal garden from the informal grass meadow where there are chicken and bee hives.
On the other side of the house is the walled garden with a central pond and fountain and four parterre beds planted with Cornus alba and Rosa ‘Desdemona’ around clipped half standard Elaeagnus. The parterre is screened by pleached Malus Everest. The walled garden is a white garden planted with over 60 trees, shrubs and perennials. The tinkling water and the white planting provide a restful space. The separate areas of the garden are entered by painted wooded gates. Outside the kitchen window is a discreet New Zealand garden dominated by three tree ferns and a Pawlonia tree under planted with Libertia.
Anne Keenan, Landscape Architect and Garden Designer, designed the garden and its planting.
