Herstmonceux Parish Trail

Seven gardens inc a historic windmill and allotments. In Cowbeech there are three gardens: Cowbeech House, a place to linger with an exciting range of water features and sculpture in the garden dating back to 1731. Vintage car collection on site to view. Merrie Harriers Barn is a garden with sweeping lawn and open countryside, colourful herbaceous planting and a large pond with places to sit and enjoy the view. Kerpses is a delightful mixture of mature trees, shrubs, herbaceous borders, vegetable garden, ponds and a meadow. In Stunts Green, The Allotments comprise 54 allotments growing a huge variety of traditional and unusual crops. Nearby is The Elms, a working florist's cutting garden. In Herstmonceux, Hill House has abundant roses, trees, shrubs and varied perennials, a greenhouse, and a wildlife pond with water lilies. Plenty of seating areas to sit and reflect and have tea. The historic Windmill is well worth a visit and where you can enjoy a BBQ lunch or tea.

About Herstmonceux Parish Trail

Herstmonceux Parish nestles in the heart of 1066 county of East Sussex. It is a working rural community with an impressive history to match; one of the best brick built castles in the country, now owned by Queen’s University, Ontario and has the largest post mill in the country at Windmill Hill. The Parish has a few things to be proud of. It has a long tradition of trug making, with a working truggery and shop on the A271 to the west of the village. Starting from either Cowbeech (note the gardens at Merrier Harriers Barn, Kerpses and Cowbeech House are just across the road from each other) or at one of the gardens in the village of Herstmonceux, the trail takes you through an interesting variety of garden styles, from cottage garden, community allotments, a florist’s cutting garden, formal gardens and a mature garden with large pond. At The Windmill you will find delicious teas, a BBQ and refreshments following your afternoon’s meandering. Note this is not a walking trail although three gardens in Cowbeech are close to each other.
