About 38 The Clump
The layout of the garden began emerging about 25 years ago. The original orchard had been removed and several mature trees lost. The aim was to develop a more enclosed sylvan setting to create a feeling of privacy and tranquillity. The landscape suggested that it be divided into sections separated by bushes, hedges and trees, and enlivened by shade tolerant plants and bulbs. Only the front garden and a small part of the rear garden receive a significant amount of sunshine. The stony soil is slightly acidic despite the underlying chalk of the Chiltern Hills which surfaces in other gardens nearby.
The Yellow primroses, snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells provide succeeding waves of springtime colour in the shaded areas, and a collection of hemerocallis and lilies do so later in the sunnier parts.
There is a small collection of autumn flowering narcissus.
