Chagford Community Gardens

This is a community plot consisting of 'starter' beds for people on the waiting list for an allotment as well as a medicinal herbs bed, a culinary herb bed, several fruit trees and two beds for unusual, mainly perennial plants. Lots of native wild flowers around the plot, a pond, two sheds, a composting area and more. We also have people referred from the local health centre.

About Chagford Community Gardens

Allotments are changing and we hope to demonstrate, through example, a range of techniques. We prepare all beds without digging by using ‘lasagna gardening’, which is barrier mulching with cardboard, followed by layering of materials. We work with nature, not against, and have as many insect and wildlife attracting plants and features as we can squeeze into a small plot. We love polyculture rather than monoculture and use no chemicals.
We are a new project and we work with Wellmoor in nearby Moretonhampstead and collaborate on workshops also with our Chagford charity, www.proper-job.org.
We are developing showcasing the various uses of plants from fibre and dye plants to medicinal and therapeutic benefits. We also very much hope it can be an attractive space for people to just come and sit and relax or socialise with friends and enjoy the wonderful view right out to Kes Tor on the moor.
