About Dullingham Railway Station
The station garden is one of over a hundred stations adopted following the ‘Station Adopter’ initiative, which is a scheme enabling individuals and communities in East Anglia to get involved with their station. Managed by Greater Anglia the scheme was launched in 2003. Until the stations adoption in 2019, it had had only minimal maintenance since 1967. All that was growing was nettles, brambles, privet, hawthorn and ivy. We used the ‘no dig’ method, and free soil improver, gradually increasing the area worked. It is a low finance garden, with plants donated from local residents or grown from seed and cuttings, however this has limited the planning. Plants are displayed in donated upcycled planters. Water is provided from water butts. We aim to provide year round interest, and ideally make bold displays that can be spotted from passing trains. We have noticed an increase in wildlife and even had tadpoles in the pond. We all work together on the station as a team, learning from each other and enjoying each other’s company.
We have been motivated by local residents who have fond memories of the station, and the collection of awards and photographs to be shown in the exhibition, which we are hoping to add to.
