About Eagleswood
Eagleswood is situated within 3 acres at about 600ft elevation on top of the North Downs above Lenham. We moved here from the Mendip hills in Somerset in 1987. Approximately 2 acres are formal garden of which two thirds have been developed from sheep pasture since 2000. Virtually all of the trees and shrubs, apart from those on the boundary, have been planted by us. Many have been grown from seed or cuttings.
The soil is an acid loam over flints and clay, hence allows us to grow a number of magnolias, camellias and other acid-loving plants. Drainage is poor but trees and shrubs once established, seem to enjoy the conditions. In addition to exposure to cold east and north winds, the garden is also plagued by moles, pheasants and occasionally rabbits! The layout is quite complex and is largely based on island beds of varying shape and size. The garden contains a wide range of trees, shrubs and herbaceous material aimed at giving year round garden interest. Many of the plants are rare and unusual and should prove to be of interest to plants people.
