Goathurst Gardens

Four very different gardens in the picturesque village of Goathurst on the edge of the Quantock Hills. The Lodge and Old Orchard are beautiful examples of quintessentially English cottage gardens approx 30 metres apart in a rural village setting. The gardens at Halswell Park are a history of garden design in England, with a new knot garden created to reflect an original C16 design. The garden of the Temple of Pan is centred on an C18 baroque folly built as part of the pleasure gardens for Halswell House.

About Goathurst Gardens

Old Orchard is ¼ acre garden planted to suit the cottage and boasts over 100 viticella clematis interplanted with a range of shrubs, herbaceous perennials, annuals and summer bulbs. The Lodge is a 1/3 acre garden surrounding a thatched cottage comprising flower borders packed with shrubs and perennials. Fruit and vegetable beds are also a feature. At Halswell House, we start at the formal and structured knot garden, laid out in front of the Elizabethan Manor House, with views out to the pre-Georgian parkland beyond. The Baroque-faced wing of the house is set within a classic Georgian pastoral idyll, overlooked by classical temples. While the Georgian pleasure gardens in Mill Wood, with its follies, bridges, and ponds set in a rolling valley, are filled with newly-planted trees. The walled Dovecote garden is a new garden planted out in 2023. The Temple of Pan is situated in a shallow coombe and made up of 4 acres of lawns, borders, woodland walks and a large pond. There are fine views of the surrounding countryside and distant views of the Bristol Channel Nand the Brecon Beacons. Please note there is limited parking at The Temple of Pan and the garden is steep in places.
