Grow Speke

The development of this once derelict space has enabled the community to access a broad range of gardening and well-being activities that are free and varied including horticulture, food growing, arts and nature conservation as a way to build social connections and lasting friendships. The site now has a range of features, including 2 polytunnels, raised vegetable growing beds and hügelkultur beds that we allow groups and volunteers to ‘grow their own’ produce and flowers. We have also planted a fruit tree orchard, wildflower meadow, native hedgerow, established an apiary for beehives/honeybees and a wildlife pond that are sensitively managed to increase biodiversity on the site.

About Grow Speke

Since April 2017, Groundwork CLM as a charity organisation have been managing the ‘Grow Speke’ project and site. We are successfully continuing to work with the local community to make the physical changes needed to transform what was a concrete wasteland into a vibrant community gardening space. Physical site developments have included the installation of community facilities including a workshop, welfare cabin, a site kitchen, an outdoor gym and a toilet. We have improved the entrance to the site with the installation of ‘Grow Speke’ feature gates to create a safer and more visually appealing space in the local neighbourhood.
Through volunteering and community engagement we have developed strong links across THE Liverpool City Region. Grow Speke provides volunteer opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to benefit equally from the site. Volunteering sessions run year-round with activities ranging from food growing, arts and crafts, wellbeing programmes and conservation activity. We also deliver an annual programme of community events aimed at bringing local people closer together.
