About Higher Locrenton
Higher Locrenton is the rump of a former dairy farm, with house and grounds of 2 acres plus three pastures used for grazing. It is set on a hillside overlooking the East Looe River valley, sloping to the south and west.
The beds near the buildings and yard at the top of the garden are relatively formal, with terraces, steps and ramps. These include a rose bed, kitchen beds in cool whites, blues and silver, hot beds of fiery colours, and a 30 metre pergola draped with clematis and scented evergreen climbers. The bank behind features hellebores, hemerocallis, drift roses and small acers for interest through the seasons.
The remaining beds and paths go with the flow of the hillside. The mound of mounds highlights sun-loving shrubs and perennials. A shady walk down the west boundary of the garden features many varieties of ferns, shade-loving perennials and shrubs.
The main bed meanders across the width of the garden and is planted with a colour palette of pastels and softer shades. There are two informal ponds with beds close by. The lower part of the garden contains a copse underplanted with bulbs and a mini-arboretum set in the greensward.
The eastern part of the garden consists of an orchard and a kitchen garden featuring a wide variety of soft fruit.
