About Hillside
Historic Grade II* listed Hillside is flint walled with 18th century threshing barn and gazebo.
Near seaside location on chalk downland, the garden has been sensitively redesigned by Jude Galloway. The garden balances naturalistic planting and ‘rewilding’ with more defined mown pathways. Surrounded by high flint walls, there is a ‘secret garden’ feel, with distinct areas and plantings to be discovered such as (swimming) pool bed with irises, valerian and stipa gigantea , roses, small orchards (apple, pear, plum, greengage, cherry, medlar and quince), herbaceous and shaded woodland beds and willow walk, wild meadow, listed trees and cottage garden.
Weather willing, irises, alliums and roses should be at their best in early June.
Homemade teas served in 18th century listed barn with views to Beacon Hill and the windmill. Horse chestnut, Corsican pine and mulberry trees with historic sycamore walk in wild meadow, fringed by pathways, vegetable plots and beehives (Hillside honey will be for sale). Hillside is home to friendly dogs, hens and bees so sadly no doggy visitors.
Hillside is cited in Angela Thirkell’s Three Houses in which she writes about her childhood visits to her grandparents Edward and Georgiana Burne-Jones home in Rottingdean, visiting Hillside garden and enjoying homemade apricot cordial at ‘hospitable Hillside’.
We trust that visitors will find echoes of childhood adventures in the garden at Hillside as well as a hospitable welcome.
