About Hillside
The 10.5 acres of land surround the old Cosford Union workhouse of which only a very small part remains. The house and grounds had been uninhabited for 2 years with only grass and trees and no ornamental planting.
We started the garden in 2016 with the area at the back of the stables being turned into a fruit and vegetable garden with two greenhouses.
All the island beds are planted up with a mix of shrubs and perennials to give a long season of interest. As there is a large rabbit and deer population the beds had to be protected whilst the plants were young.
There is a small knot garden outside the summerhouse and raised flower beds in the walled stable yard. More trees are also being planted.
The woodland walk is being developed for spring interest with snowdrops, daffodils, primulas, bluebells and forget-me-nots.
The meadow has rides cut through for a relaxing stroll to watch the Buzzards circling overhead.
In the spring fed pond there are water lilies, and moorhens raise their chicks.
Tea, coffee and soft drinks with home-made cakes and sandwiches will be available to purchase.
