About Lanlivery Cottage
A small hillside garden on multiple levels, bordered by woodland, open field and railway embankment. Our philosophy has been to create a wildlife friendly garden, balancing naturalistic areas with more formal, ornamental areas with hardy exotics. We recycle, and reuse plants and items from the site. To promote soil health, we avoid soil disturbance as much as possible, and allow organic matter to decay on the surface. Garden zones range from cool and shady by a natural stream, to dry and sunny on the upper terraces, with ponds and mini-meadow between. Although a small plot, we have created diverse habitats, which is reflected in the wide variety of our garden wildlife, including grass snakes, bats, water shrews, amphibians, hedgehogs and voles. Plants include tree ferns, Hedychium, Tetrapanax, Podophyllum, Kniphofia northiae and Trachycarpus. Challenges include the difficult terrain and being in a frost pocket.
