About Monastery of Our Lady of Hyning
The Hyning Monastery & Estate sit within an 18th C landscape. Entering the grounds through mature woodland and pasture you will glimpse the late Georgian House and glorious surrounding countryside. The house and estate was purchased in the 1930’s by Lord Peel, who engaged, the well known garden designer, Ralph Hancock (famous for the roof garden at Derry & Toms in London). The Hancock gardens included a walled garden for Lady Peel, rockeries, terraces, formal rose garden, a pool house, productive vegetable plots & orchards, glasshouses along with many other designed grass walks. Many of the elements of Hancock’s design remain, but the planting and manicuring of the gardens is no longer realistic or appropriate.
In 1974, the house and grounds were acquired by the Bernardine Cistercians of Esquermes. The community of 8 sisters, offer spiritual retreats in these peaceful surroundings. A small group of volunteers, help to keep the garden in a relaxed & informal manner to provide an oasis of calm for those seeking solace.
