About Rose Croft
On a steep, west-facing slope, with shallow stony soil, the limestone bedrock is never far below the surface here. The present path and planting matrix has been developed during the past 12 years from some structure laid out by previous owners. Mixed planting, in distinct areas, successfully gives colour and interest for as much of the year as possible, but the central perennials and ornamental grasses come into their own full splendour to capture most attention in late summer and into autumn. From the house and glass-balustraded seating terrace, a ‘birds-eye-view’ of the full garden can be admired and its coexistence with the wider landscape which flows away towards Whitbarrow Scar and the Lakeland mountains, can be appreciated. But wander down the flights of steps, explore along the narrower lateral paths to discover a great deal more in detail: the individual plants, the veg beds, fruit trees, a summerhouse and the stream-side wildflowers which marry into the neighbouring rural scenery. This unique plot has a secret-garden quality to it; although open and light, it contrives not to be seen from the road, a true retreat.
