About St Margaret's Allotments
Visiting St Margaret’s Allotments will be of interest not only for the range of richness of gardening on the plots, but also for the interest of this large and picturesque site, together with St Margaret’s Churchyard, for history and natural history. From here may have come the stone for building Durham cathedral and castle. The Norman church of St Margaret, which it is hoped will be open to visitors during the open day, is one of the earliest churches in Durham. The ponds and wild places within the allotments and the churchyard makes for richness and interest of bird and insect life.
Experienced gardeners will answer visitors' questions, on the plots and also in a Gardeners' Question Time session for those new to gardening and allotment gardening; Tours of the plots; Historical and natural history tours; Musical events; Home-made refreshments, plants and produce for sale.
