About The Aviary Garden
Winds, salty air and a heavy clay soil have added to the challenges Ian and Matthew have faced. They have created a tropical oasis in a little over a year, with plants establishing very quickly. Palms, bamboos, ferns and grasses are already well established. A Tetrapanax, PaulowniaTomentosa, Trachycarpus Fortunei and Phoenix Palm along with various tropical coloured flowers of deep oranges, purples and some pinks set off the vibrant, exotic feel. Cannas flowering at various times, heleniums, kniphofia and phlomis are some of the plant varieties along with geums and alliums. The aviary is well blended within the garden, with finches, canaries, java sparrows to name a few. Water features from very small, to a small fish pond and a water trough, all add to encouraging the wildlife and help with biodiversity, along with bird boxes and homemade bug hotels.
