About The Coach House, 3 The Hermitage
This C18 Coach House is a great backdrop for a little courtyard garden, and displays several of my sculptures. It was was first created in the early 1970s by mainly building brick containers. Soil had to be brought in and has been encouraged with compost. The main flower bed now has a small pond. A sculpture carved in Rose Aurora marble is flanked by a Coronilla Glauca. There is a long mirror attached to the wall that adds to the sense of space. Somehow surviving growing in pots are Prunus Autumnalis; lippia; Fuchsia Magellanica ‘Alba’; Cotinus Atropurpurea; Olive; Myrtle, Daphne Odora; Sparmannia Africans; Rosa Mutabilis and Rosa ‘Cecile Brunner’, plus two Convolvulus Cneorum. In May, an unusual double ‘Black Dragon’ Wisteria graces the studio end of the courtyard. Generations of robins that feed from my hand come to the ceramic birdbaths and join other birds at the feeding station, which was designed by me and fashioned in wrought iron by Conan Sturdy.
This ‘secret garden’ was first shown with the National Garden Scheme in 1982. It has been featured on TV with Penelope Keith, is in a book called ‘Britain’s Inspirational Gardens’ and appeared in several gardening magazines. I enjoy showing it, together with other gardeners in the National Gardens Scheme.
