About The Coach House

Developed over the last 20 years around the original planting of mature trees, the garden has a sloping aspect on light sandy soil. Terracing gives some flat areas, two of which are divided by a rose hedge of ‘Rhapsody in Blue’. In the island beds, successional planting aims for all year interest and includes grasses and nectar-rich flowers. The mature Copper Beech and London Plane tree are underplanted in the dry shade with woodland plants and Hydrangeas. A pond area in a separate ‘room’ also has an insect hotel to attract breeding and overwintering wildlife. The pond itself is home for newts, frogs and toads and provides a water source for the resident honeybees. A number of seating areas offer views of all aspects of the garden. There is also a ‘stumpery’ and a small ‘tropical area’ with Banana, Beschornaria, Eucomis and other exotics. Planting for colour, scent and interest throughout the year is the intention. With relaxed informal planting and self-seeding encouraged, the garden is continually evolving and changing.
An additional pasture area ‘Alfie’s Field’ is gradually being incorporated into the main garden. From the courtyard wall is a very steep slope which is being stabilised, terraced then planted with ground cover perennials. The pasture has paths mowed through it. Yellow Rattle seed is being added to reduce the strength of the grass. Spring bulbs including Camassia, Gladioli Byzantine, Narcissus Pheasant Eye have been planted. Perennials including Foxglove, Echinops, Achillea are being incorporated and annuals added to a separate bed. A second pond and bog garden area is planned for this winter.
Received gold award from Kent ‘Wild for Wildlife’ 2016, 2017 and 2019.
