About Trelan
Work started on the garden in 2013 and it already looks well established. Nothing had been done in the garden for decades. On the site of a sand school we built a swimming pond and planted abundantly around it. A series of conifer trees offered protection to these plants and the propitious micro-climate enabled strong growth. A pump and filter system keeps the water very clear. No chemicals have been used in the pond. It’s a newt’s paradise.
There’s a significant drop from the main lawn to the sunken garden which had formerly been a mass of brambles. There are cobblestones on the ground, a fruitful lemon tree centre stage, and two massive Trachycarpus Fortunei on either side and huge banana plants in the corners. This area has an Italianate feel. The garden had the advantage of having some very mature Monterey pine trees, planted when the house was built in 1927. We have planted numerous trees of many kinds in the last few years, and let the areas grow wild. There is a well established Fern garden and quite a few fruit trees.
