About Willoughby Gardens
Willoughby Waterleys lies in the south Leicestershire countryside. It’s name comes from the springs which are near the surface. The Church dates from Norman times. Five gardens are open. John’s Wood lies a few hundred yards outside the village. Parking is available on the grass verge. The site is a 1.5 acre wood and nature reserve planted in 2006 with 80cm. native trees. There is a field pond and wildflower strip where butterflies abound. Spring wild flowers including native bluebells in May. Mown paths for easy walking (with information boards) through 18ft. high trees . There is an elevated viewing platform giving fine views.
Farmway, Church Farm Lane Is a medium sized mature garden with well kept lawns surrounded by closely planted borders with herbaceous perennials, and some bedding. Lavender lined paths backed by climbing roses and clematis separate the main garden from the productive vegetable garden. A 80ft. colour themed mixed border runs the length of the garden. There are two ponds which are home to fish, frogs and newts and a variety of dragonflies in the summer. The garden was featured on BBC Gardeners World in July 2022.
High Meadow, Main St. This garden has been evolving for the past 15 years. Borders have developed with a mixture of perennials roses and shrubs. Hard landscaping was carried out in 2013 with the addition of Betula Jacquemontii, Sorbus, Joseph Rock and amelanchier trees
3 Yew Tree Close is a wrap around garden that naturally creates a series of rooms with cottage garden style borders , a rose covered arch and lavender hedge leading to a lower courtyard seating area surrounded by a mix of climbers, a small raised bed vegetable plot and shady areas.
3 Orchard road is a compact garden full of colour and interesting features including several mature clematis plants and includes a water feature.
