About Wincombe Park

Wincombe House was built in about 1810, but the land that surrounds it has a history going back centuries. In the Middle Ages the lakes were used by the Abbess of Shaftesbury to provide fish for the inhabitants of the Abbey and there are some ancient trees standing in the Park which are marked on old maps. The current garden was created by The Hon Martin and Toodie Fortescue who moved to Wincombe in the early 1960’s. When they bought the property from the historian, Arthur Bryant, the house was divided into flats and there were brambles up to the front door.
Martin was a keen dendrologist and Toodie a remarkable plantswoman and together they planted many unusual trees and rare varieties of common species. John and Phoebe have continued to nurture the garden over the past 20 years and have continued to replace plants and plant trees and reinvigorate the walled garden. Visitors are encouraged to walk in the park to enjoy the trees and views as well as tour the garden and assured of a warm welcome whatever the weather.
