About 10 Alder Wynd
Finalist in the Gardeners World 2017 garden competition, ‘Small Garden Category’, the garden demonstrates what can be achieved in a relatively small space, (10 m x 11 m) and in a very short period of time.
Created from scratch in the Autumn of 2014, the owners have had to contend with the realities of building a garden on a modern housing estate, with poor soil, builders’ rubble and a generous number of drainage inspection covers!
The garden is roughly courtyard in style and formed from a series of raised beds and green oak structures. Visitors can expect lush plantings of bananas, gingers, tree ferns, bamboos, and tetrapanax, along side traditional herbaceous perennials grasses and clematis. This compact garden also features a canna collection that now exceeds 30 hybrids and over 20 varieties of hosta. the cannas are best experienced from mid July until September.
There is a decked area adjacent to the house and a pond with water feature, a climbing rose makes an attractive boundary screen. The shady area features ferns and the hosta collection.
A water feature provides a subtle background noise. The pathways are narrow, and made of slate chipping; there are two shallow steps to and from the decked area.
