About 160 West Street
With outdoor space on 3 sides of this tiny property, the owner has taken up the challenge of ‘greening up’ what was an expanse of grey slabs & bricks. Drawing upon experience of living in Japan, making maximum, practical use of what is available has been key. The now striking laurel hedge, which is crucial to the structure of the plot, has been extended to achieve seclusion of the side courtyard. This very narrow corridor benefits from a curved path and beds, plus a full-length mirror on the far wall, creating an illusion of length. Planting blurs the boundaries. On the east-facing side of the home, some existing patio slabs were lifted for planting, others carefully chosen to remain so that access to the east-facing wisteria could be maintained for pruning. A combined bike shelter, storage unit & seating creates a boundary. Its green roof has drought-tolerant plants & creative metal & wood sculptures.
