About Beardsland
The field was acquired in 2008 . We believe that during WWII it was used in part as a market garden . When purchased it was kept as a mown field. We decided eight years ago to create a wild flower meadow and introduced yellow rattle to reduce the grass cover. Each year the meadow receives its only cut in late September by a flail collector mower. Everything is removed and composted at the top of the field. The fertility of the soil is thus gradually reduced to allow the wild flowers to compete with the remaining grasses. We now have 50 species of wildflowers including common spotted orchids.
There are several benches from which to enjoy the established meadow, busy pollinators and the views of the South Downs, however there is much more to discover as you explore this rather special garden.
The enthusiastic owners are keen to tell you about their garden and how they have established and maintain such a beautiful garden.
A warm welcome awaits you.
