About Coombe Meadow
Set in a tranquil valley, on the edge of Dartmoor, the garden was created in the late seventies on the banks of a stream. The woodland walks, ponds, terracing, wild flower meadows and tin mining archaeology had all reverted to nature. Etiolated trees and shrubs have had to be rescued by restoring daylight. The tin mining archaeology was under years of detritus and required clearing and stabilising to halt further decline.
The current owners are now 5 years in to recovering and extending the gardens. In addition to the reclamation and rejuvenation work 2 new garden areas are being added,: the Geometric Garden and the Sunken Rose Garden. In spring the gardens are a riot of colour and this winter an extra 1000 tulips will be planted.
Having taken on the task of returning it to its former glory we are now extending it while still working on recovering the last of the original features.
If you’re brave take a dip in the swimming pond fed by a spring or just sit in the area of reflections and listen to the stream and birds in the wood. Followed by a brisk hike around the perimeter path ending with a sumptuous piece of cake and a cup of tea on the lawn.
