About Cresswell Pele Tower Walled Garden
Pele towers were basically miniature castles built between 1350 and 1600 as a defensible retreat against attacks from the Border Reivers, raiders and robbers from either side of the Scottish border. Cresswell Pele Tower is a well preserved example and, thanks to recent excavations and an extensive renovation, the building is now open to the public on selected days. Much hard work has gone into restoring the walled gardens, which were derelict and are planted to provide a welcoming calm space for community use and there is an active group of volunteers.
The garden offers: Wildlife Pond, Medieval Orchard and cordoned fruit. Raised beds for food growing. Diverse floral borders. Fern border. Medieval pele tower (restricted openings). Re-enactments. Interpretation History book in print. Bee hives. Greenhouse.
