Downton House

The owner is co-author of 'The Galanthophiles : 160 Years of Snowdrop Devotees' (2018, Orphans Publishing). The walled ⅓ acre garden in the centre of Painswick provides the perfect setting for Jane’s collection of Galanthus cultivars. In addition, naturalised drifts of Galanthus nivalis and Galanthus atkinsii flourish amongst winter-flowering shrubs, cyclamen, Iris reticulata and Polystichum ferns.

About Downton House

The garden lies in the heart of Cotswold snowdrop country and the owner’s snowdrop collection provides an insight into the fascinating history of snowdrops. James Atkins (1802-1884) who introduced G. atkinsii to this country lived just up the road; and Brigadier and Mrs Mathias, owners of the Giant Snowdrop Company, retired to neighbouring Falkland House, where Herbert Ransom tended his collection of snowdrops. Painswick Rococo Garden, another famous snowdrop garden, is only half-a-mile away.
