About Hillcroft at Dilwyn

The main garden is approximately 1 acre and comprises of mature shrubs and trees. We also have an organic vegetable plot , including a poly tunnel. The garden was planted from scratch over 45 years ago and we moved here in 2014, nearly 9 years ago. During that time we have respected and maintained the original planting.

The garden can be loosely divided into 4 main areas.
A rockery close to the house and patio, which we have replanted with mainly perennials for gentle colour and texture, with a very small ornamental pond.
The main body of the garden is lawned and contains 5 or 6 beds with small shrubs and perennials.
Towards the back of the garden is a shaded woody area, packed with mature trees, including magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons, a mature davidia involucrata, eucalyptus, fruit trees, snowdrops in January and a carpet of bluebells in May.
Finally the vegetable patch has raspberries, blackcurrents, gooseberries, an asparagus bed, apple, pear and quince trees. The seasonal vegetable planting, including tomatoes, beetroot, potatoes, cucumber, squash, pumkin, garlic, onions, leeks, broad bean etc., are surrounded by box hedging. We try to eat seasonally and are almost – but not quite self sufficient.
The garden is beautiful and imperfect with lots of wild unkempt areas – hedgehogs love it.
