Lower House

Gertrude Jekyll's 1916 plans resonate throughout the garden but recent horticultural practices like top-worked Amelanchier and grafted Cobnuts reflect continuing skills. Two topiary areas highlight traditional Buxus and white roses, against a climate change response of drought resistant, pest and disease-free species. Over 400 roses, historic and modern, grow throughout even into the kitchen garden.

About Lower House

This established historic garden, previously part of the Witley Park estate, surrounds the 16th century Lower House. Displays of spring bulbs, colour at rhododendron and azalea time, summer flowerings and intense autumn shades keep the garden vibrant all year round.
The kitchen garden reflects the working nature of the garden growing interesting and unusual varieties, tender fruits in the greenhouses and delicate house and conservatory plants. For quiet areas of peace and reflection only shades of greens and shapes of foliage grow.
