About Lydeard House
We moved into Lydeard House 1999 and set to on the garden. The lake was completely silted up, so that was dredged revealing the C18th retaining walls ,giving it its shape, complimented by the two C18th bridges. This necessitated building a silt trap which was incorporated in the canal, also totally silted up, which in turn led to the complete renovation of the adjoining pergola and its new planting in 2003.Next a small woodland garden, with grandchildren in mind, was cleared from a thicket. In 2007 a walled veg garden was planned and built followed by the Chinoiserie garden that was inspired by a reference in 1788 to a Chinese Gate in the grounds. Finally the Temple Folly completed in 2012 which was an echo to the Sanky Temple which did exist in the grounds in 1787,but where? Possibly in the Sanky field just beyond the Folly. In 2021
we lost a lot of trees in the small woodland to Ash Die Back, this area is now slowly being replanted, along with two enormous Cut Leaf Beech trees that came down early in 2023 in another area of the garden, both of which have been replaced. We have also built a small garden celebrating the Kings’ Coronation.
