About Manton Lodge
On the outskirts of Manton village, at the end of Lodge Lane, the walk to this garden is well worth it. A gravel drive, leading down to the rambling C18 stone farmhouse, is flanked by a mature ornamental shrubbery and has stunning views across the Chater valley. The house is tucked into the side of the valley, and from there the garden falls away in a series of terraces. Grass paths meander through colourful, mixed borders of shrubs, roses and herbaceous perennials. Wide stone steps lead to a formal lily pond on a terrace overlooking the surrounding fields. From the terrace stone steps or a bark path lead up the side of the garden, through shrubs and trees, to the stable block. A wicket gate (beside the composters) opens for a 50m walk through the ‘Foxes’ Earth’ orchard and back. Behind the stables, a beech-hedged kitchen garden has raised beds, cut flower border and a fruit cage. Brick steps lead up to the croquet lawn. Further round from the stables is a paved sitting area and knot garden filled with roses and lavender. From here you pass back through the ornamental shrubbery to the exit.
