About Old Gardens

The original garden had deteriorated considerably when we took over in 2007. Whilst building on to the house it was decided to completely re-design and re-structure the garden. The sloping site was terraced, the soil for which came from creating a large underground workshop. This required the top soil to be removed, tons of subsoil from underground to be re-used, then the top soil replaced.
The design phase started in 2010 with David Harber’s ‘Portal’ the key feature. The initial planting was completed in 2013,
Because of the complicated irrigation, drainage and lighting systems, and major disturbance to the soil we are still experimenting with what will and what will not grow, with some notable disasters en-route.
