About Pine Tree Cottage
Work on our garden began nearly 24 years ago. Slowly but surely, we turned what was a neglected sloping patch into a delightful garden that we feel privileged and proud to have created. We started in the front garden first. This now consists of a lovely but high maintenance fine-leaved lawn, which, I shamefully admit sometimes receives more attention than my ‘hubbie’. This pampered lawn is surrounded by shrubs and perennials which complement our Sussex Cottage. Some shrubs like the variegated Aralia are architectural in form whilst others, like the Nandina, are softer. Perennials such as Geraniums, Campanulas, Sedums, Liriopes and Phlox provide the underplanting. Whilst a Wisteria, a number of Clematis and golden leaved Jasmines provide a vertical back-drop. Tucked away to the side of our cottage is the area that became our next project. We created a pond whose size dominated this sloping area. The aim was to create a seating area for the summer months which provides a constant source of interest and enjoyment during our many but short-lived tea-breaks. The planting here is exuberant, vibrant and stimulating and is framed on three sides by an abundance of climbing plants. One of these frames is a twenty-five foot long stepped pergola clothed with a late flowering Clematis, and Wisteria. These steps take one up to the top of the terraced garden. Here a path meanders between the beds and a sunken seating area provides a viewpoint for most of the back garden. The back garden, our last project, is mainly laid to lawn surrounded by borders packed largely with shrubs; here emphasis is placed on both shrubs and perennials to provide colour, texture and form throughout the year. A mature Cypress and a Tibetan cherry tree, together with plant clothed fences and trellis provide vertical interest. Finally, a patio area provides us with another place to sit, time allowing that is!
