About Ravelin
This mature ever-changing garden is thought to be built on medieval clay pottery works in the royal hunting forest. Small pottery pieces can be seen interspersed with sedum planting.
The garden has a wide range of unusual plants full of colour and texture. Seasonal interest is provided by a wide variety of hellebores and bulbs in the spring, hardy geraniums, and heucheras in the early summer and aconitum, Michaelmas daisies, grasses and dahlias in the autumn.
It is designed to enable you to move through the different areas and to use the seating in each ‘room ‘ to relax, reflect and enjoy the different views and experiences and the opportunity to appreciate the unusual plants collected by the owner, some of which have been propagated and are available to buy.
Recent developments have come from the redevelopment of a former greenhouse and shed area which was always damp. Water found here, has enabled a small well/ bore hole to provide water in the garden . The area has been redesigned into a new contemporary paradise style garden with a glass walled pergola allowing views all around and a courtyard area both with lighting and water features enabling evening usage.
We are trying to react to climate, environmental sustainability issues and encouraging wildlife by adapting our gardening practices. Self-seeding is encouraged to add colour and vitality. We try to control pests naturally and do as little digging as possible, relying on techniques such as mulching instead. We are moving towards interspersed planting to prevent ‘gaps’ when one type of plant fails through drought or wet and away from ‘block’ planting.
