About Saffrons
A ¾ acre garden tucked into a quiet side street in the charming village of Steyning. Being on the top of a hill, the site is windy, the soil free-draining and very stony.
The over-riding theme is one of contrast in leaf shape and texture and the enhancement of colours by their opposites. The flower beds are an inviting laboratory for experimentation and continuous change.
The south boundary is comprised of mature trees providing shade for hellebores, ferns and rhododendrons. Elsewhere there are many ornamental trees: Japanese maples and cherries, a lovely Pagoda dogwood as well as Clerodendrons and white stemmed Himalayan birches.
Shrubs such as Oak-leaf hydrangea have been chosen for their interesting leaves. A variety of bamboos have been used as hedging and specimen plants. Hardy fuchsias fill two foundation beds.
The productive part of the garden includes raised vegetable plots, an asparagus bed and a large berry-filled fruit cage.
At its best in mid to late summer.
