About Shalden Park House
The gardens of Shalden Park House feature an arboretum, herbaceous borders, wildlife pond, and a walled kitchen garden with both cutting and vegetable beds. The cottage garden style planting includes peonies, irises, alliums, nepeta and an abundance of roses.
With sweeping views across the lawns to the countryside beyond, the garden has an open feel and enjoys a bright, sunny aspect. The lawns in the main garden are enclosed by herbaceous borders with a mixture of shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses as well as a mature Magnolia x soulangiana Lennei. Other notable specimens in the garden are the fully mature Robinia pseudoacacia ‘False Acacia’ which in a warm, late spring is covered in pea like flowers and the Sequoiadendron wellingtonia ‘Giant Redwood’.
The arboretum was started in 1990 by first under-sowing wildflower seed in an existing paddock area, then over the years we have added a varied selection of trees. The wildlife pond encourages wildfowl to breed. We have an outdoor swimming pool surrounded by Mediterranean stye borders which leads to the Headland border, recently redesigned and planted with a mix of soft planting in whites, blues and pinks. Our walled garden comprises of two greenhouses and both vegetable and cutting beds. A wide selection of vegetables are grown as well as fruit, sweet peas and dahlias for cutting. A mature fig tree climbs the walls as well as a mixture of climbing roses.
We look forward to seeing you at our NGS open day where ample parking is available and refreshments are provided with seating on the terrace of the outdoor pool.
