About Southgate House
The house was first developed in the Georgian period as the Norwich Harbour Masters office. In Victorian times it was converted to a dwelling when if bordered the former Richmond Hill pleasure garden. Little trace was left in the garden of this past history by 2018. However, we found some maps and plans of parts of the garden including the original woodland paths. We have since used this history to create a modern garden with historical references.
The garden comprises two main areas the woodland garden which looks great in the spring and now forms part of a children’s animal sculpture which is spread throughout the garden. The the second areas comprises a series of themed areas or garden rooms including a scent garden around the west patio, a white boarder, a Japanese garden and an Italian inspired garden. There is an extensive vista over the city too created as a result of the vantage point upon which the original house was built. The garden is nature friendly and we have a great deal of wildlife including deer despite the dog. Oh yes, we are dog friendly too!
