About Stone Lane Gardens

Stone Lane Gardens is a gem!’ – Joe Swift, horticulturist and broadcaster.

An RHS Partner Garden, Stone Lane Gardens is a spectacular 5 acre woodland and water garden that enchants and inspires in every season, renowned for a National Collection of Birch and Alder. The garden is threaded with pools and streams, while gleaming tree bark in a myriad of shades is enhanced and complemented by a varied tapestry of shade-loving plants. A delight to visit at any time of year. Newly opened are wildflower meadows with a wonderful view of Dartmoor north to south.

The garden started life back in 1971 when modern-day tree collector Kenneth Ashburner began planting birch and alder trees from the seed he gathered on his trips around the Northern Hemisphere. Gradual and artfully planned landscaping created the framework of the garden today, which now includes a newly planted arboretum extension with glorious views across Dartmoor. The garden is a patchwork of unusual and beautiful trees, many of them rarely seen in the UK. This beautiful setting is home to the annual Sculpture Exhibition, started by Kenneth’s wife June in 1992 as an important showcase for talented artists. The gardens became an RHS Partner Garden in 2018.
