About The Barn

The garden at The Barn Serge Hill has been made since 1987 by Sue and Tom Stuart-Smith. It has been a source of inspiration for Sue’s celebrated book “The Well Gardened Mind” and for Tom’s work as a landscape designer. The site began as an open, windy, hilltop, devoid of trees. There are now several contrasting areas, an enclosed Courtyard and a more open area laid out within a formal framework comprising a wide range of herbaceous perennials and shrubs tolerant of generally dry conditions. To the east of this is an acre of meadow, comprising mainly North American plants and close by this is a greenhouse and vegetable garden. The garden is set in attractive open countryside, particularly surprising for its location 25 miles from Central London. It is surrounded by 5 acres of wildflower meadow on the edge of which there is a wildlife pond
