About The Gates

Tucked away in a corner of the tranquil surroundings of the London Road Cemetery The Gates horticultural project has, since 2009, transformed the of the old Council Nurseries into a growing oasis.

Forming part of the Frontline Partnership, a non-profit making Brentwood based charity, The Gates provide adults with a learning disability an opportunity to develop new skills within a safe and caring environment. On offer is a wide range of horticultural activities including: site management and creative builds, bee keeping, events and workshops, woodwork and arts and crafts. It is an opportunity to see the results of numerous fundraising efforts and a commitment to sustainability through recycling, repurposing.

The two acre site comprises of numerous different growing areas and creative spaces. There are: 4 large greenhouses, used for raising plants, educational workshops and craft. Allotments that provide ample space to raise fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. A poly tunnel that houses more raised beds. A shade tunnel that provides a space for compost, storage and sheltering plants. Cold frames that provide additional planting and shelter. Various seating areas, gardens and water features that create visual interest and a workshop and classroom that allows participants to learn and develop new skills.

Away from the productive areas, enjoy a sensory walk through the small orchard, grape vines, and mosaic garden. Continue through The Dell amongst the mature trees via a small pond, stumpery and seating area for concerts. Pass by the Apiary for a rest in the allotment gardens and return via the poly tunnel, cold frames and pergola. There are plenty of seating areas around the site to sit and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

Enjoy refreshments and take the opportunity to purchase from the wide range of plants, organic produce and craft that will be for sale.
