About The Laurel House

Welcome to our enchanting garden, a sanctuary of beauty that invites exploration. This dry garden of 2/3 of an acre is extremely well drained as it sits on a gravel bed. It has become even drier over the last 10 years and plants have to be chosen carefully to cope with the difficult conditions. Developed over the past 35 years it has matured it into a vibrant tapestry of colour, texture and scent. Surrounded and containing mature trees, it offers a secluded retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s my personal paradise that I embarked on when I began training to be a Garden designer at Sparsholt Agricultural College.

Our garden is a celebration of the seasons providing year-round interest. From winter to spring, the garden is a symphony of colours and fragrances

The garden features a dynamic interplay of foliage shapes, forms, colours, and textures. In the woodland walks, we have carefully selected plants that thrive in dry shade including ferns and bulbs, creating a serene and peaceful environment with softer colours. The borders have evergreen and flowering shrubs, grasses and perennials at all times of the year. Contrastingly, our sunny, hot coloured beds come alive in late summer with vibrant hues, showcasing a diverse palette of blooms.

Providing habitats and homes for wildlife is very import to us. We have bird boxes, a tawny owl box, a hedgehog house, wood piles for stag beetles and slow worms live in the cracks between the stone walls. The inclusion of two ponds add to the garden’s ecological diversity and help support habitats for a host of wildlife, including birds, bats, newts, damsel flies and dragonflies.

With different levels, a greenhouse, a vegetable plot, and a cutting garden, the space is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The lawns and seating areas offer tranquil spots to pause and take in the surrounding beauty. We pride ourselves on reusing existing materials and integrating sustainable practices, such as making compost and leaf mould, which we add over the year to enrich our low-nutrient soil. Our composting system is a very important and pivotal addition, carefully managed to produce the maximum output by turning regularly and is essential to the health and success of the garden.

We hope you find solace and inspiration here as we have, and we look forward to sharing the beauty of our garden with you.
