About The Old Court House
The Old Court House is situated alongside the River Rhiew opposite the Talbot Hotel. Built originally in 1665, the upper floor was used between 1666 and 1730 as a leet court and occasionally as a magistrate’s court. The ground floor was originally open to house pony traps. The building has had many uses, as the earliest Post Office in the village, as a restaurant, disco and more recently as a house. It was renovated recently in 2015 when the riverside garden was created. The Old Court House riverside garden is connected to a private terrace at one end by a metal staircase, made by local Berriew sculptor/metalworker William O’Brien, and at the other end by a grass ramp around raised beds for soft fruits and vegetables. The constantly changing river further enhances the garden’s idyllic situation, with views of the bridge and the centre of the village.
