About The Old Vicarage
The colourful Old Vicarage is a local landmark in this little-known part of Monmouthshire with splendid views over the surrounding countryside. A range of unusual tree have been planted throughout the garden in the last 20 years and, depending on the weather, maybe in blossom.
There are many different areas to explore. The drive is lined with azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons and hellebores, as well as a wide range of Spring flowers. Borders are punctuated with neatly clipped box features. The charming courtyard leads into the gravel garden with its gazebo and then onto the kitchen garden, which is lined with box hedges. At the bottom the garden there are ponds and a wildflower meadow which was planted 5 years ago and is a haven for bees and other insects.
One of the many fascinating this about gardens is how they change and develop through the years and the seasons. This garden in particular has its own definite character, deciding which plants will flourish and which will not. It has been created and maintained by the incomparable Hartley.
