About 49 Ellis Fields

Welcome to a little slice of tranquility in a busy City.

The garden is in two parts, the small front garden being more formal and utilitarian. It has evolved over many years, and is always a “work in progress”, and a place for trial, and the inevitable error! I like to think the small front garden is an attractive, and happy welcome to my home. A delivery driver recently commented that she would “like to pull up a chair and spend the afternoon there”. I think on our open day, we will make sure that there is seating so you can do that too!

You go through a small side gate (big enough for an average width wheelchair) to the back garden. This garden was professionally landscaped with the help of a garden designer. There were specific design requests and input from inspiration gathered over many years of visits to other lovely gardens, Chelsea flower shows, magazines, media, and many a beautiful garden centre. As a very regular NGS garden visitor, I know what a wonderful source of inspiration they are too, and supporting some truly wonderful charities in the process. For any wheelchair users, the garden should be mostly accessible to you. There are two very short steps to slightly higher levels.

The back garden is often commented on as being very calming and serene. It is wide and short, and can be viewed in the whole from most points. The planting is dense, verdant, and extends from the edge of one wooden fence to the edge of the next fence. There are a number of inherited and established trees and shrubs, which have become part of the surrounding planting. The initial planting has changed over the years since the new garden was started in late June 2019.

The garden is mainly irrigated, which some plants love. There is a long lushly planted bed that I refer to as “The Jurassic flowerbed” as the many ferns thrive underneath the great big Annabelle hydrangeas, with anemone ‘Honorine Jobert’, and three Loquat trees, one of which is particularly wonky!

There is a bed with Mediterranean planting, including an abundance of verbena bonariensis and other wildlife friendly plants. This bed is constantly buzzing with bees, and the occasional visiting hummingbird hawk moth. Unfortunately I can’t guarantee you a visit from one of these on the open day, but maybe a cup of tea and a slice of cake will make up for that!

The resident wood pigeons, and I look forward to welcoming you to our small urban garden. I have found this garden a great place for solace, relaxation, entertainment, and hard but very rewarding work. I hope it will hold some inspiration for you too!
