About 5 Oakfields

As you walk down the narrow back alley, look out for the hostas, ivies, a choice tree fern and the enormous elephant ears of the colocasia. Enter the terrace, and the garden takes you by surprise, as it drops down to a small pond and then rises gently into a woodland area. Walking around, at each turn, there is a different theme and planting schemes full of interesting and unusual plants. Wander past the new wildlife pond, fed from the overflow of a large lake in the woods outside the property. The pond area is planted with different iris species and moisture-loving plants. Glance up at the trees to see the rambling roses cascading down. There is a white ‘Bobby James’, a pink ‘Apple Blossom’ and a deep red of ‘Chevy Chase’. The herbaceous bed is backed by a trellis with a City of York rose and various clematis. The beds further up, in the shade, are full of snowdrops, anemones and pulmonarias in the Spring. The shady woodland area is planted with a shrub layer of hydrangeas, rhododendrons, azaleas, and camellias inter-planted with hostas, hardy geraniums, hellebores and ferns. The small area in front of the summerhouse is full of naturalised spring-flowering bulbs. There are several strategic places to sit and enjoy the peaceful garden, where you can listen to an unusual number of birds and the cascade that rushes down the rockery. As you leave the garden in the front, notice the modern stone water feature and early summer flowering shrubs interspersed with hardy salvia. Clematis plants weave their way through the shrubs and onto the fence, providing accents along the boundary. The walnut tree, which provides a good crop of nuts, is underplanted with narcissus and hardy geraniums.
