About 77 Rushmore Road
A pretty garden in the heart of Hackney. A N facing garden divided into two sections: an area laid mainly to lawn with patio and seating areas as well as a small amphibian pond. This is in the shadier area of the garden and there are planting challenges in getting plants to grow and thrive. There are a number of ferns and hellebores as well as rambling roses, jasmines, pyracantha and hibiscus. The borders consist mainly of herbaceous shrubs and are on different levels. In addition there are numerous plant pots containing flowering annuals.
Work is starting on creating a gravelled dry border to reduce the amount of watering required.
The sunnier rear of the garden consists of a greenhouse and vegetable patch. The redcurrant and raspberry bushes produce fruit over a prolonged period in spring/early summer and figs are in abundance late summer. Main vegetables grown are runner beans, tomatoes, courgettes, broccoli and herbs.
As well as growing tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and tomatillos, the greenhouse is used to propagate plants from cuttings and seeds collected from the garden and elsewhere.
