About 88 West Street
This small cottage garden was designed by the owners twelve years ago. West facing with an old wall planted with evergreen and deciduous clematis, creating a wind barrier. The colourful central bed, surrounded by a brick path, has plants of various heights, encouraging you to walk around it . The planting consists of shrubs, roses and perennials, with repeat planting of penstemon and Helenium. Obelisks with clematis and a beautiful Stipa Giagantea also add height The garden flowers from early spring until late in the year, which, with two small ‘pot’ ponds ensures that a variety of wildlife is attracted to it. Along one side of the house is a narrow gravel shade garden planted with ferns, camellias, climbing hydrangea and fatsia, there is a 4 metre well from which water is pumped into a very large ceramic pot, creating a water feature. The other side of the house is paved and has pots containing vegetables. Trees; Olive, Prunus Amanogawa and Sorbus Joseph Rock, provide height and spring and autumn colour. A small herb garden reflects the owners love of cooking. There are many small additions to add interest; a reclaimed wood robin, giant worm, Easter Head, iguana and a creative use of mirrors. Growing hops for the Deal Hop Farm.
